40 Hour Advanced & Multiparty Mediation Workshop
This 40 hour Advanced Mediation workshop, delivered by highly experienced mediators, is a “hands-on” experiential training that deepens and extends the core 40 hour training given in our 40 hour Intensive Mediation workshop. It explores both the theory and practice of mediation at deeper levels and takes participants into disputes that are deep rooted, larger and more complex.
This workshop will be of interest to people who are full time or part time mediators, or who are working towards this goal, and who wish to deepen their understanding of and ability to mediate in more complex and deeply conflicted disputes. Completion of this workshop, together with our 40 hour intensive mediation training provides an excellent foundation for mediating difficult disputes in a broad variety of areas including workplace, family, community, and business settings.
As a result of taking this workshop, participants will learn, among other things, how to:
- – deal with impasses in mediation;
- – work constructively with lawyers and advisors;
- – work with highly entrenched positions;
- – work in mediations where the focus may be to save relationships or where the focus may be to resolve transactions, or both;
- – select and use various mediation approaches to deep rooted values-based and identity-based conflict;
- – mediate complex multi-party, multi-issue disputes.
- – Participants will also be given many helpful new tools to add to their mediator’s tool box. New tools include, among others, new skills to substitute for the calling of a caucus, helping people save face, changing the “perception of the gap”, the one text process, party self confrontation, party self soothing, the Double Blind, and the Mediator’s Proposal.
- – Generous opportunity for self reflection is given and participants are encouraged to draw on their own experiences, and the experiences of the other participants, in the positive and supportive learning environment created by our trainers and coaches.
Learning will take place through a combination of interactive adult teaching methods including short lectures, panels, case studies, videos, demonstrations, small group discussions, interactive exercises, simulations, practice drills, and role plays. All participants will be given generous opportunity to practice as a mediator.
Constructive feedback is given throughout the course and participants will be given the opportunity to have a confidential assessment of their ability to demonstrate mastery of the key mediator competencies as identified by the ADR Institute of Ontario.
The completion of this course, together with our 40-Hour Foundational and Conflict Management & Mediation workshop will count toward the 80- hour educational requirement for the Chartered Mediator (C. Med) or Certified Family Mediator (Cert. F. Med.) designations issued by the ADR Institute of Canada.
Participants should be prepared for some work during the evenings to prepare for exercises and simulations the following day. Some of the material covered may be sensitive, including cases of abuse, gender and race conflicts.
This course will be of particular interest to practicing mediators, HR professionals, managers, supervisors, union representatives, lawyers, diversity consultants, ombudsmen, conflict management professionals, and anyone wanting to take their conflict management and mediation skills to a higher level.
